Foot Switches
Foot switches fall into two categories: Latching and Momentary action. The difference is that a
Latching pedal is pressed ON, then pressed again for OFF. A
momentary pedal only operates while it is held down. A typical
application for a momentary action pedal would be sustain on a
keyboard. To confuse this issue, some modern equipment is fitted
with an electronic latch and so use a momentary action pedal to turn
the device on and off. In this case a latching pedal would require
two press to turn on and two more to turn off. If this happens to
you, change the pedal to a momentary action type.
When using momentary action
pedals be aware that some have their switch contacts closed when not
pressed while other types have the contacts open. You need to get a
type that suits your keyboard otherwise the effect works in reverse
i.e. press the pedal and the sustain goes off instead of on. If in
doubt get a type that can work either way by setting a changeover
switch. These types are known as "dual polarity" although
strictly speaking that is not the correct term for this
feature.
